How can we ensure a safer, more sustainable and healthier food system? Which path should the food industry take to meet current challenges?
Last week I took part on the FoodTure event organised by AZTI innovation centre. FoodTure is an innovation platform to drive the transformation of the agri-food industry towards a more sustainable system. This project is fully in line with Blendhub’s collaborative and platform business model and philosophy.
At Blendhub we foster collaboration over competition because when we share values and ideas, we are creating shared value for the food industry and for the society. And I am delighted to participate in this kind of initiatives to reach out to more stakeholders in the supply chain and convince them that a change of mindset towards a more collaborative model is needed.
At FoodTure I explained how my vision always have been to anticipate the current challenges in the global food industry -environment protection, demographic growth and management of resources- by developing a collaborative digitized platform-based service model to ensure a more sustainable food production and more accessible quality control for any agri-food company.
To innovate you must be politically incorrect and connect with science. 100 years ago, there were 1 billion people in the world; today there are 8 billion and without science and people thinking different we would not have be able to face these challenges and change the world for better.
When I founded Premium Ingredients in 1996, my simple idea was #killtheblackbox, focusing on building a more transparent agri-food model so industry knows what they buy and consumers what they are eating. This principle inspired us to what Blendhub is today. In 2002 we started exporting from a factory in Spain, but I thought there was a more efficient and sustainable way of manufacturing food anywhere in the world without having to set up static factories that require greater investments of money and time – and have demostrated not being sustainable for now +100years.
Then, in 2011, we deployed our portable factory patent and concept in India. The result was immediate – with a shorter supply chain, less transport and environmental impact, less time and product manufactured locally in a more sustainable way, we realized an 30% cost reduction of our product.
Based on that experience we decided to create a global replication model to take this localized factory concept anywhere in the world; and in 2014 we furthermore decided to open our model so that any manufacturer can use our infrastructure and produce sustainably anywhere in the world. That made the automatic change going from being a product company to become a global service company.
In the last 10 years we have gone one step further and digitized all our processes, formulas and quality control in the cloud: we create digital twins of all ingredients and food products that enter our production system to facilitate quality control and security throughout the supply chain. In short, we have created a truly sustainable system and we are opening our tools to be used by any other stakeholder in the agrifood value chain to create shared value on a global platform model.
My message is simple – let´s collaborate and create shared value instead of being obsessed with competing? start collaborating on generics and create your own market niche? If we think as a platform from #seed2mouth we will satisfy consumers and planet and I am absolutely convinced that there is room for everyone.
Creation of new recipes, ingredients, brands and final food products will flow faster and faster and Blendhub is here to help you connecting your ideas to market in a localized and sustainable manner and inside a global platform of opportunities.
